Challenges & Approach
Three-Process Sequencing with Heat and Chemical Sensitivity:
Silkscreen is heat-cured. Rhinestones are heat-fixed. Monkey Wash uses chemicals and mechanical abrasion. The sequence had to protect the ink and rhinestones while allowing the wash to achieve its intended effect.
Rhinestone Adhesion Through abrasive Wash
Rhinestones were applied before the Monkey Wash — meaning they had to survive chemical spray and mechanical abrasion without detaching or loosening, especially along the high-movement shoulder seams.
Targeted Monkey Wash Precision
Unlike an all-over wash, this Monkey Wash needed to be applied to specific zones — seams, pocket edges, cuffs — while keeping the body panels darker and cleaner. Achieving this level of control required precise spray mapping and zone protection.
450gsm Structure vs. Wearability
The client wanted a heavy, structured feel that held the boxy silhouette, but not a hoodie that felt stiff or stifling. Standard fleece at 450gsm can feel dense and hot.
Locked Process Sequence
Silkscreen → cure → rhinestone application → heat-fix → targeted Monkey Wash → neutralization → final QC. Tested on proto samples and locked before bulk. Silkscreen and rhinestones go first because their adhesion requires clean, untreated fabric. The wash comes last.
Rhinestone Wash-Fastness Testing
Proto samples with rhinestones were run through the full Monkey Wash process and 5-cycle consumer wash tests. Rhinestone spacing along the seams was adjusted to allow fabric movement. Heat-fixing parameters were dialed in to ensure adhesion survived the chemical and mechanical exposure.
Spray Mapping for Zone Control
Our wash team created a spray map — a visual guide showing exactly which zones receive the Monkey Wash spray and which are protected. Shoulder seams, pocket perimeter, sleeve hems, and front edges were sprayed; body panels, hood, and back were protected to maintain the cleaner black base.

We recommended 450gsm 100% cotton French Terry — same weight and structure as heavy fleece, but the loop-back interior provides natural breathability. The 100% cotton composition also ensures even wash chemical absorption for consistent distressing.

How durable are the rhinestones through the Monkey Wash process?

Can you apply the Monkey Wash before the silkscreen and rhinestones instead of after?
We recommend applying silkscreen and rhinestones before the wash. The heat required for curing ink and fixing rhinestones is best applied to clean, untreated fabric. The Monkey Wash is then applied last, with spray mapping to protect the decorated areas while distressing the targeted structural zones.
